The New York Jets introduced their new GM and head coach today and the key terms to take out of the press conference were “accountability”, “sustained success,” and “alignment”.

Let me start by saying this, Aaron Glenn sounds like an NFL head coach and one that players will respect and follow. That isn’t always the case. Glenn’s delivery and his message are coming from a genuine place that players will be able to see. He won’t be a hard-nosed coach. He won’t be a “player’s coach”. He is going to be Aaron Glenn.

Glenn has made it clear by both his words and his actions that he wants to be the head coach of the New York Jets. He doesn’t just want to be an NFL head coach. I pointed out recently that that sentiment was a reason a large contingent of Jets fans wanted Rex Ryan to be the head coach. Now they have it in Glenn.

Speaking of Rex, Glenn even had a Rex Ryan moment.

Glenn and Mougey seemed in lock stop early on, despite the idea that the two had not previously worked together. If I didn't know any better, I would have guessed the two were friends for years and Mougey hired Glenn as opposed to Glenn being in on Mougey's interview.  The two spoke often of their ideal partnership and how they plan to be aligned in their decision making.

Speaking of decision making, Glenn made it clear that Aaron Rodgers would be discussed with his new GM and the two would decide together if Rodgers was the right fit to lead the Jets in 2025.

Glenn spoke about his goal of working with new GM Darren Mougey in creating a culture of “sustained success”. He learned from Bill Parcells and Sean Payton not only how to create success, but how to create success that will last.

He was even later asked about how Jets fans are so starved for success and how would Glenn bring that success, and his response was simple: “sustained success”. This isn’t about making a playoff run. This isn’t about ending a playoff drought. This is about changing a culture. We have heard that a lot as Jets fans. The only way to change the culture is to win and not sell the future to pay for the present.

That being said, Glenn might have the correct attitude and plan, but he also needs to understand the situation he is walking into. Jets fans are out of patience. It isn’t fair to Glenn. It isn’t fair to Mougey. But it is the truth. Jets fans need something to hold on to that isn’t just a promise of a better future. They have been trapped in desert for too long and are sick of hearing about how beautiful the ocean is. They need a drink of water to get them to keep on. Glenn and Mougey need to deliver that, dare I say, this season.

Jets fans want to buy in to your plan, Aaron. But you need to prove to them that it is a plan worth buying into.

This is the team you have chosen.
