Aaron Rodgers is technically still under contract with the New York Jets. But the team has already officially announced the decision to part ways with him, which makes the veteran quarterback free to talk to other teams.

After 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and a trade to the Jets, this is a new experience for Rodgers, as he will be a free agent for the first time in his NFL career.

This week, Rodgers was approached by a TMZ's paparazzi in California. Understandably, he didn't talk much and wasn't deep into his thoughts to answer him. Still, the quarterback indicated that he wants to keep playing in his age 41 season.

Asked about what's the most important factor in his free agency decision, Rodgers said:

"If they want you."

This aspect seems particularly relevant because Rodgers had shown signs of willingness to play one more season for the Jets, but the new team's management didn't want him.

But Rodgers also has another important point about what matters for him.

"If you got a good team."

At this stage of his career, it truly wouldn't make sense for Aaron Rodgers to keep playing for bad teams. He's made $380 million throughout his NFL career only in salaries, and at 41, he doesn't need to prove anything to anyone else.

But there's obviously a sense, based on how great he was, that one Super Bowl ring is too little for his stature in the league's history. Rodgers cares a lot about legacy, and competing for championships again would be a great reason to push this forward for a little longer.

Potential teams

Right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers are probably the most logical fit for Aaron Rodgers. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are both free agents, and the Steelers’ only quarterback on the 90-man roster at this point is Skylar Thompson, a former Miami Dolphins backup who signed a future deal for 2025.

The Tennessee Titans would be a potential landing spot as well, but they had the worst record of the league in 2024. And if Rodgers’ second point about playing in a good team is real, the Titans are more than an offseason away from that.

Rodgers was slated to make $37.5 million this season for the New York Jets.
