Jets fans you waited. You waited all preseason. You waited all offseason. You waited for years. You waited for decades. Aaron Rodgers took the field for the Jets and temporarily ended your quarterback drought.
And though it might only be a meaningless preseason game, it did matter.
Aaron Rodgers (and the rest of the Jets starters) started the game to a thunderous applause from the Jets fans at Met Life stadium against the New York Giants (it was technically a Giants home game).
The Jets fans were loud when Rodgers took the field and he greeted them banging his chest and acknowledging the crowd. “I had some butterflies, for sure,” said the 39-year-old Rodgers. “I loosened up pretty good when I got the ovation when I took the field. That was a special moment.”
Rodgers did not disappoint. The Jets first team offense ran nine plays in two drives resulting in one touchdown. Rodgers himself was five of eight for 47 yards, a touchdown, and no turnovers. “I got in, didn’t get hurt, scored,” Rodgers said. “It was a good night."
Perhaps the most exciting part of Rodgers’ debut was not only how crisp the offense was, but Rodgers’ obvious connection with sophomore wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Rodgers hit Wilson for three catches for 30 yards including an absolutely beautiful 14-yard touchdown over the defender’s helmet.
"I've made a lot of throws like that over the years, but he does a good job, late hands I think is important because the DB is just waiting for him to just put his hands up," Rodgers said about his trust with Wilson. "So, I think he probably had some good late hands, but he naturally creates a lot of separation, so he makes it pretty easy to throw to."
Rodgers seems to already have a good rapport with Wilson, something Jets fans who watched Rodgers connect over and over with Davante Adams should be very excited over.
Things did get a little heated. On the play before the touchdown, Rodgers and linebacker Jihad Ward exchanged words after Ward bumped him after a completion to wide receiver Mecole Hardman. After his touchdown throw to Wilson, Rodgers barked some words back at Ward.
On the other side of the ball, the Jets first team defense looked as good as advertised in their two series. Granted, it was mostly against Giants backups, but Sauce Gardner had a pass break up that Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t have been able to complete.
Quinnen Williams was a wrecking crew causing havoc in the Giants front that allowed Jermaine Johnson to pick up a sack. The Jets are as ready as they can be heading into the season.
Oh, by the way, the Jets won the game 32-24.
Predicting the Jets 53 man roster
The Jets might be sorry to see some of these guys go.
