Aaron Rodgers continues to prove why it’s not worth signing him in free agency for any NFL team, even those with a need at QB
Free agent QB Aaron Rodgers is a walking red flag.
Aaron Rodgers had himself another week in the spotlight as his free agency saga continued. The 42-year-old veteran quarterback made another appearance on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show" and ripped into the New York Jets for how he was treated this offseason.
Rodgers went into detail about his meeting with new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, claiming that he flew across the country "on his own dime" just to be told he was out as the Jets QB 20 seconds into the conversation.
While Rodgers expected a long conversation about his future and the future of Jets football under the new regime, Glenn cut right to the chase. The organization was going to go in a different direction at quarterback and they wanted Rodgers to weigh in on the messaging of how it was released to the public.
"I was kind of shocked. Not shocked because I didn't think that was possibility. If they want to move on, that's totally fine. But shocked because I just flew across the country and you could have told me this on the phone," Rodgers told McAfee. "This is verbatim exactly how it happened."
According to Rodgers, Glenn wanted Rodgers out as QB because he assumed Rodgers would undermine him in team meetings. The entire conversation lasted about 15 minutes.
Rodgers isn't worth signing
This is just another example of why every team should stay as far away from Rodgers as possible this offseason. There's always a chance he'll pop up on McAfee's show and bad mouth you in another viral clip.
The Jets had every reason to move on from Rodgers. He's 42-years-old and the team finished 5-12 last season. Rodgers is not the quarterback he used to be and his body is clearly feeling the effects of a 20-year career. Of course a new head coach wants his own guy under center and doesn't care to tie himself to Rodgers, who is not above publicly bashing the people he doesn't work well with.
If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers right now, even with a need at quarterback I'm not sure Rodgers is worth signing. You'd be better off taking a shot on a rookie or swinging a trade for a veteran like Kirk Cousins. But an aging QB that is also a PR nightmare? Run.
If I'm the Jets right now, I'm feeling really good about Aaron Glenn as my head coach. This is a guy who is not going to tolerate the BS. He wants you all the way in or all the way out. Rodgers is clearly neither. Time will tell if another team is foolish enough to fall for his toxically passive aggressive charade, but don't be surprised if we've seen the last of Aaron Rodgers in the NFL.
