The NFL is a large collection of dominos and when one falls, others inevitably fall into place.

It was reported earlier today that the Dallas Cowboys are close to acquiring George Pickens along with a sixth-round pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a third-round and fifth-round selections. Pickens became expendable to the Steelers after they acquired D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks for a second-round pick earlier this off season.

Those moves have created dominos that reportedly have now reached the New York Jets. According to ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio, Allen Lazard is “very much in play” for the Pittsburgh Steelers if they look to replace the recently departed George Pickens.

The Steelers are in midst of waiting for Aaron Rodgers to decide if he wants to play in 2025 for Pittsburgh and any Jets fan will tell you, Rodgers likes his guys. Rodgers completely and totally trusts Lazard. And Lazard, for whatever reason, performs much better with Rodgers than he does without him. In fact, Lazard was so bad for the Jets at one point during his first year in New York while Rodgers was out with his Achilles injury, Lazard wasn’t even dressed for games despite being healthy.

Lazard recently slashed his 2025 salary from $11 million to $2.5 million, with $1.75 million of it guaranteed. In his two-year Jets career, Lazard had 60 receptions for 841 yards and seven touchdowns. Most of those stats came in year two when Rodgers started every game for New York.

The move is still likely pending on Rodgers’ decision to play in Pittsburgh or not. I would doubt that the Steelers would want Lazard if not to appease the 41-year old Rodgers with one of his trusted receivers.

As for what a Lazard trade to the Jets would net New York, I would be shocked if it were anything better than a sixth or even seventh-round pick. At this point, it might be better for the Jets to cut their losses with Lazard and get what little they can for him.

It’s safe to say, to this point, Lazard’s Jet career was a disappointment, both for him and for the team. The thing that he will be remembered most for as a Jet will be drops and penalties. Not something a wide receiver wants to be associated with.

For the Jets, Lazard was slotted as a starting receiver for this upcoming season, but no doubt he really won’t be missed by the fans or by Justin Fields.

If the move were to happen, the Jets might be looking to knock down another domino and replace him with another wide receiver, possibly in a trade or in free agency.
