Out of the box option for the Jets at QB would be an unpopular decision but may be the right one

Another quarterback has entered the conversation to be the Jets starter in 2025 and many fans won’t be too happy if it happens.
According to ESPN’s Seth Walder, the Jets could be looking at Derek Carr as the starter for the 2025 season.
In this scenario, the Jets pick Carr up off the Saints' discard pile. It's hard to know what the new Jets regime will be looking for after moving on from Aaron Rodgers, but new coach Aaron Glenn saw the Lions win with an unwanted Jared Goff. Carr doesn't have Goff's upside, but he would raise the Jets' floor. And as poorly as recent seasons have gone, New York has the players to launch a quicker turnaround than one might think.
Seth points out that the Saints are in dire straits with their current salary cap situation and with the change in leadership after hiring Super Bowl winning OC, Kellen Moore, they should embrace a full rebuild. “Carr is owed a fully guaranteed $10 million roster bonus and a non-guaranteed $30 million salary. The former is a sunk cost for the Saints, but the latter can and absolutely should be saved” Seth writes.
At this point, the Saints are planning to stay with Carr for 2025 according to their GM Mickey Loomis, but we all know how quickly things can change once the offseason really gets going.
Carr to the Jets almost happened two seasons ago when he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders. He flirted with the Jets and said multiple times that he had every intention of signing with New York, except for one little problem. The Jets were already all-in on the Aaron Rodgers train. Carr, feeling the writing was on the wall for Rodgers to go to the Jets, met with and eventually signed with the New Orleans Saints.
Depending on the cost of obtaining and paying Derek Carr, this isn’t my least favorite option for the Jets. Carr is a traditional style quarterback and fantastic leader. He is beloved by his teammates so much so that when Davante Adams left Green Bay, he went to Las Vegas because he wanted to play with Carr who was his quarterback at Fresno State.
Speaking of Davante Adams, obtaining Carr might be incentive enough for him to stay with the Jets and rework his contract to do so. It would solve two offseason problems for the Jets with one move giving them the quarterback and the second receiver they need.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Carr means a Super Bowl for the Jets. In fact, I think it is far more likely that the Jets are in the cellar again with Carr leading the way. But his ceiling is definitely the playoffs with this team and his floor has them picking in the top 10 next year in what is considered to be a loaded quarterback class. After 14 seasons of no playoffs and decades with no franchise quarterback, either scenario sounds good to me.
No matter what happens, the Jets quarterback scenarios for 2025 are bleak at best. The team will have to choose whichever is the lesser of all the evils that they see fit. I would prefer a Derek Carr to making a run at Justin Fields or trying to draft a quarterback early on this weak draft class. That doesn’t mean that I think Carr is better than Fields or Sanders, it just means long term I think Carr will be an easier out when a real franchise quarterback opportunity presents itself.
Carr is certainly not the name Jets fans want to hear for 2025, but I have a hard time finding any names that are realistic possibilities at this point. Given that, I would prefer a traditional quarterback and a good locker room guy than some of the other options.
