The NFL got some awful news early on Sunday. Former New York Jets star center and fan favorite Nick Mangold passed away at age 41 on Saturday night.

Mangold has passed away from complications of kidney disease, the Jets announced. He was 41 years old.

“Nick was more than a legendary center,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.” — New York Jets

Mangold posted a message about his condition earlier this month. He and his family were looking for potential donors.

“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” he said. “After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.” — Nick Mangold

Last week, Mangold was selected as one of the 52 Modern Era players who took the next step toward the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026. Even after his retirement from football, Mangold remained committed to playing a role in the local community and providing a helping hand for the Jets franchise.

Mangold was a three-time All-Pro for the Jets and started 171 games for the organization.
