Every offensive player wants to score a touchdown. Every defensive back wants to intercept a pass. And every defensive lineman and linebacker wants to sack the quarterback.

Any player who rushes the passer has a list of quarterbacks they are dying to get on the ground. Some players go their entire careers just hoping for a shot at a certain quarterback. Sometimes they want to sack a guy because he is a rival. Sometimes they want to sack him because he is elusive. And sometimes they want to sack him because he is a legend. The last one is true for Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson.

Appearing on the God Bless Football podcast promoting Bounty, Johnson was asked who is the quarterback he wants to sack the most in the NFL, but hasn’t and he had an ironic answer: Aaron Rodgers.

“Don’t dig too deep into this. [It’s] Aaron Rodgers,” Johnson said. “When Aaron was brought in the first thing he said to me was ‘I’m excited to have you on my team’ and I said ‘I am too, but I’m just mad I can’t sack you.’ Because you know I got the pick six on Joe Flacco, I sacked Russell Wilson. So, there’s guys I grew up watching and I’m making plays on them. I can’t hit Tom Brady anymore. I can’t hit Payton [Manning]. Can’t hit Drew [Brees]. So now I’m just like ‘well, Aaron. Aaron is still kicking’. But then we got him, and I was like ‘oh my God’. I was happy but then the little competitiveness on my shoulder was like ‘you know you can’t sack him anymore, right?’”

Johnson would have gotten a chance to sack Rodgers his rookie year when the Jets traveled to the Green Bay Packers in Week 6 back in 2022, but Johnson missed that game with an ankle injury. The Jets won the game 27-10 and Rodgers was sacked four times in the game, twice by Quinnen Williams.

If Johnson gets his way, he will trade the chance to sack Rodgers for another chance to play alongside him. Johnson would like to have Rodgers back with the Jets in 2025 rather than playing for another team.

“He does a great job of making everyone around him better, which is a very, very key attribute to have in being a good leader, which every quarterback should be,” Johnson said. “Yes, obviously I’d like to have him back”.

The Jets likely have the rest of February to decide on Rodgers’ future with the team. Rodgers also has a chance to decide if he wants to continue to play football, and if he does under the new regime with the Jets including new head coach Aaron Glenn and new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand.

Whether Jermaine will ever have a chance to hit Aaron Rodgers on the field is a question most Jets fans are anxious to hear the answer to. And apparently, so is Jermine.
