Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Corral (2) tries for a throw under pressure from New York Jets defensive tackle Tanzel Smart (79) during the second half at Bank of America Stadium.

The Jets cut down their roster to the required 53 players on Tuesday and now comes the important step of building your practice squad while simultaneously scouting and/or signing players who were cut from other teams.

The Jets already lost three players who they cut on Tuesday. Linebacker Claudin Cherelus was picked up by the Carolina Panthers and offensive lineman Trystan Colon was signed by the Arizona Cardinals.  Zonovan "Bam" Knight signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad.

Meanwhile the Jets have been busy trying to keep their own guys in the franchise by signing them to the practice squad. Teams can have a maximum of six "veterans" on their practice squad and 10 players with two or fewer accrued service years. A total of 16 players comprise every NFL practice squad.

Smart was a fan favorite from “Hard Knocks” who said on the sidelines of his last preseason game against the New York Giants “I deserve to play with you all” to teammates Quinnen Williams and Jonathan Franklin-Myers. He will likely be the first player called up from the practice squad in the event of an injury.

Tim Boyle is familiar with Nathaniel Hackett’s scheme and will make a valuable addition to the quarterback room. He did not play particularly well this preseason, but with Rodgers and Zach Wilson, he was always fighting for third place on the depth chart.

Kuntz is an ideal developmental project with a never-before-seen size/athletic profile for the position. He failed to stand out much this summer, but the Jets are thrilled to have him back on the practice squad where he can continue his development.

The Jets were lucky to keep Trey Dean on their practice squad, as there was some chatter he could be claimed. The former five-star Florida recruit is one of the most coveted players on the team's practice squad.
