Aaron Glenn sends a strong message to Aaron Rodgers that the Jets should have sent last year

The New York Jets have their new head coach and GM and they introduced them on Monday to the New York media in a press conference that went very well.
While the media and the fans were excited to hear about Aaron Glenn’s philosophy, and the fact that he chose the New York Jets over every other job, there was a dark cloud hanging over the press conference from the time Darren Mougey and Glenn started talking. There was an elephant in the room that every reporter was itching to get their hands on. What is going to happen with Aaron Rodgers? Reports from earlier in the day were that both Glenn and Rodgers were open to working together in 2025.
Glenn attempted to “nip it in the bud” before the reporters could get their hands on a microphone to ask him about it. His comment was very neutral and practiced “coach speak”.
“Aaron Rodgers will be talked about,” Glenn said. “We already texted that communication with Aaron Rodgers. As we continue to look at the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly.” But come on AG, this is New York. You weren’t going to get away with nipping that conversation in the bud. So, he was asked again. And again. Finally, AG delivered this message.
“This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers, folks,” Glenn said. “It’s about the roster”. Whether he meant to or not (and I hope he did), Glenn sent a strong statement to Rodgers. Rodgers is no longer in control of this team. He may be the quarterback of this team, but he is not the head coach or general manager of the New York Jets. He is a player on the roster.
The perception of the New York Jets since Rodgers was carried into the building on a palanquin was that he was in charge. And every move the Jets seemingly made after that did not change that perception from Saleh’s firing, to the Davante Adams trade. Glenn and Mougey’s arrival are the first signals to Rodgers that this won’t be like it was last season. Maybe Rodgers is okay with that. Maybe that is what he actually wants. Maybe he hates it and will look to retire or hit free agency. Either way, if Rodgers stays in New York, he should go back to being a player and not a sultan for the Jets.
Glenn did go on to say it would be a “football decision” on whether or not they decide to keep Rodgers as the starting quarterback in 2025. That’s all anyone inside and outside the 1 Jets Drive should want: “football decisions”.
When Woody Johnson was asked about Aaron Rodgers, to his credit, he said the right thing, essentially claiming that it would be up to Glenn and Mougey how they wanted to proceed.
I don’t believe him for a second.
I have thought since the end of the season that Rodgers would be gone, but the more time that passes, the more I think he may be back for another run in 2025. Time will tell if the Jets run it back with Aaron Rodgers in 2025, this time as just the quarterback or if there is a no guy under center.
Jets may have found the perfect GM to navigate strange times ahead for the franchise
The New York Jets have found their new general manager to pair with new head coach Aaron Glenn as the two look to turn this franchise around. Assistant GM with the Denver Broncos Darren Mougey has reportedly agreed to terms with the Jets to be the new head General Manager in New York. At just […]
