It’s time for a hard truth New York Jets fans. It’s going to be a bitter pill to swallow, but like any medicine, you must take it in order to get better.
The Jets do not know much about being a winning franchise. There are numbers stacked to the ceiling that prove that point and we don’t need to revisit them. Accept it and move on. That’s the bad news.
Here’s the good news: The Jets finally have a quarterback who knows how to win and what it takes to get to the Super Bowl, and even win the Lombardi trophy.
And here’s the best news of all: the Jets are actually listening to what he has to say.
ESPN’s Dianna Russini has been covering the NFL and the Jets for a long time and she attended Jets OTA workouts last week. She believes the Jets and Rodgers are doing everything the ‘right way’ in order to make Rodgers’ brief stay with the Jets a successful one. Appearing on the “God Bless Football Podcast”, Russini indicated the Jets are willing to let Rodgers take the lead.
When you talk to people who played the game, or coached, or you know, prior GMs -they agree when I've talked about this- the Jets are doing the right thing because they're not messing this up. There are teams out there that would have messed this up. They would have brought Aaron in and said, ‘This is how we do it here and then you're gonna do that.’ But at least the Jets are smart enough to say, 'This guy's won before, [he's a] four-time MVP, so, here are the keys to the the Jets organization. We're going to do what you need.' – ESPN’s Dianna Russini on the God Bless Football Podcast
The fact is that you don’t hire a Michelin Star chef and then try and teach him how to cook a steak. You let the chef cook his way. He earned it. You learn from him. Rodgers earned it. It’s time for the Jets to learn from Rodgers.
The Jets have almost no playoff experience on the roster, let alone any Super Bowl experience. For them to try and tell a quarterback as accomplished as Rodgers how to do things would be a huge mistake. Credit the Jets for not messing this up.
Credit is especially due to Robert Saleh. While Saleh is a leader of men type coach, for him to understand the valuable asset he has in his new signal caller is impressive. It doesn’t mean Saleh is not the leader of this team, it just means he is willing to adapt and grow to help the Jets become the version we all want them to be.
For his part, Rodgers is making sure that his presence is felt on and off the field. Russini went on to describe how Rodgers is conducting himself with the Jets.
In terms of what Aaron's doing on the field; he's stopping plays [and] calling guys out already. Not in a dictatorship-type of way or even in just like an overly-aggressive way, but just in a coaching [sense like], 'Hey, this is why we do this. This is how I like it. This is how I like this run. I want this route to be on this side.' He's very hands on and specific about what he wants and how do you not follow suit? – ESPN’s Dianna Russini on the God Bless Football Podcast
This is why the Jets were willing to pay what some called “too high a price” for Rodgers. It’s organizational changing move. It teaches the young players and coaches how to prepare in order to win. You can’t win by simply being more talented on Sundays in the NFL.
The Jets are letting Rodgers show them how to win and Rodgers is showing them how to win in May, so they can hopefully win in February.
