Garrett Wilson is a rare talent. He is a true, bona fide number one receiver in the NFL.

He is also being wasted by the New York Jets.

Wilson ended the 30-0 loss against the Miami Dolphins with three receptions on only four targets for a measly 29 yards. The Jets couldn’t manage anything offensively and had no game plan or adjustment to get Wilson the ball. Those are Terrelle Pryor numbers.

Wilson is in his second year with the Jets after being drafted out of Ohio State last year. He persevered through his rookie campaign with terrible quarterback play and managed to earn himself Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. This year was supposed to be his coming out party but instead he finds himself right back to where he started.

Wilson clearly still has a lot of passion for the game and a desire to be great, but the way the Jets are wasting this young receiver could jeopardize his future with New York. CBS cameras caught him speaking passionately with Aaron Rodgers on the sidelines during the game.

You can see his frustration with how the offense is run and his desire to make a contribution, almost pleading with Rodgers to make things better. But it is more of the same from the Jets offense.

Both Denzel Mims and Eljiah Moore looked to be young up and coming receivers in this game (granted, not to Wilson’s ability) and wound up being so frustrated with the offense that they demanded out.

While standing at his locker after the game, Wilson was asked about his usage and was quick to point out that he was aware he didn’t get a target until the third quarter of the game.

Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard are two of the best corners in the game, but that is no excuse to ignore a talent like Garrett Wilson because he has a tough matchup. This was a systematic failure on the Jets. From Robert Saleh to offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Trevor Siemian to the offensive line.

After the loss, Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson was asked about Miami’s offensive scheme getting Jaylen Waddle open with Tyreek Hill out and he seemed to admire the Dolphins coaching staff and blaming himself for not getting the same treatment. "I think they have a lot of pieces in their favor that make it easier to scheme. Tyreek goes down, they put Waddle in there and he goes for 150,” Wilson said. “And that’s, that’s the ball I grew up loving. But that’s not how it’s going to be. I gotta figure out how to be better, run better routes, be better in the meeting rooms, figure out how I can be involved early."

Wilson is asking himself the same questions Jets fans are asking; “why can’t they scheme any type of offense to get their playmaker(s) the ball in space?” The Jets knew the focus of the passing game against the Dolphins was going to be Jaylen Waddle with Tyreek Hill out. Yet he still managed eight catches for 142 yards. Why can’t the Jets do that with Wilson? Or even Breece Hall?

After the game, Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard said, “They out-schemed us, out-efforted us. They played a better football game than we did today.” Allen Lazard shouldn’t be the voice of the Jets locker room considering how he has played this year, but when asked about it, Garrett Wilson agreed. There is clearly mounting frustrations with the offensive game plan.

At this point, Nathaniel Hackett has done nothing as offensive coordinator except a few good moments in Hard Knocks and be Aaron Rodgers’ buddy. I need to wonder if even the great Aaron Rodgers can defend the job Hackett has done this season as coordinator or save his job.

New York Jets quarterback Tim Boyle (7) gestures to a teammate while standing on the field with wide receiver Garrett Wilson (17) and running back Breece Hall (20) and offensive tackle Mekhi Becton (77) during the second quarter against the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium.

When Joe Douglas took over as General Manager of the New York Jets back in 2019, he had a long laundry list of things to fix from the previous regime. But one thing stood out more than all the others: the offensive line. Joe came into a team that had little to no investment along […]
