The New York Jets have finally seen the light and sent Zach Wilson to the bench.
According to multiple reports, the Jets have benched the 2021 second overall pick and will start Tim Boyle for their Black Friday matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
It follows another dismal effort from Wilson, who completed just 46.7 percent of his passes for 81 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the Jets' 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Wilson was replaced by Boyle in the third quarter of that blowout defeat, and the urgency of the situation has forced head coach Robert Saleh into a long-term change with the Jets' playoff hopes hanging by a thread at 4-6.
Boyle's ability to keep the Jets afloat could determine whether Aaron Rodgers decides to make good on his vow to return from a torn Achilles in December.
Rodgers, per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports (h/t ProFootballTalk), has told the Jets he plans to return to practice on December 2, one day before their Week 13 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.
In other words, the earliest Rodgers could make what still seems a very unlikely return to game action is their Week 14 game with the Houston Texans on December 10.
By that point, the Jets could be 4-8 and facing the prospect of needing to run the table to even have a glimmer of making the playoffs in a crowded AFC race for the postseason. Eight times in the AFC have at least six wins, while 11 teams are at .500 or better. The Jets face the Texans, Dolphins, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots in their final five games.
Rodgers would predictably bet on himself to overcome the odds, but attempting to pull off what would amount to a miracle finish after making an expedited return from a serious injury behind a terrible offensive line that lost left tackle Mekhi Becton to ankle injury on Sunday is an arduous task that is not worth the obvious risk.
For Rodgers' ambitious plans to be given any sort of serious consideration, the Jets need Boyle to come in and help them to at least one win. Otherwise, Rodgers is undoubtedly best served resting up and getting ready for next year.
