There have been a lot of changes for the New York Jets this offseason.
And a lot of that centers around the offense.
Yet, while the Jets are hoping this changes their luck, one former NFL general manager details what the Jets biggest concern will be heading into the 2023 season.
The most notable change is the addition of MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is coming in after the former No. 2 pick Zach Wilson clearly struggled. Because of this, Mueller stated that is was "easy to fault him as the villain within their ranks."
"Their offense as a whole was awful, with poor design only to be outdone by poor execution. I can find many a play where players were giving much less than a full effort," Mueller wrote in an article for The Athletic. "Enter failed Broncos coach and Rodgers buddy Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator to install something different. Are we all supposed to forget the offense he installed in Denver? Just blame that on Russell Wilson? OK, well, I’m not buying it quite yet, and GM Joe Douglas should not be, either."
Hackett was hired as the head coach of the Denver Broncos prior to the 2022 season, but didn't even make it the full year. He was fired on Dec. 26, with the Broncos sitting at 4-11.
Yet, he was given another chance at coaching, with the Jets hiring him as the offensive coordinator at the end of last season due to his relationship with Rodgers. Hackett served as the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator from 2019-2021.
Since his hiring, Hackett has added two-time Super Bowl champion Mecole Hardman, a receiver who formerly played with the Kansas City Chiefs. They also have brought on two familiar faces from the Packers.
"I like the signing of WR Mecole Hardman because his speed changes the way people defend you, but the additions of Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb do not move the meter for me at all," Mueller said. "I also worry about 37-year-old Duane Brown holding up for 17 games at tackle, and a lot is riding on the reincarnation of Mekhi Becton at the other tackle. Rodgers can’t sleep great knowing this. “Hope” is not a plan, and the health of A-Rod is a giant concern just based on the group upfront."
There are high hopes for the Jets this season, but that rides on the quarterback remaining healthy.
And with that, they are hoping Rodgers will change the turnover ratio, after having the fourth-worst in the league last season. That combined with Robert Saleh becoming more comfortable in his head coaching role could lead to more successful for the Jets.
"My concern is the Jets still don’t have enough “guys” at linebacker, the secondary and the offensive line," Mueller added. "According to Over the Cap, they are sitting on roughly $23 million of cap space; that would be burning a hole in my pocket if I were the Jets. Let’s selectively continue to add some depth."
