The NFL draft is less than two weeks away and right now teams are putting the final touches on their draft boards and doing final research on any players they are considering taking. The New York Jets certainly have a lot of work on their roster especially after an awful run at free agency.

New York has a lot of roster holes still left on their offense and defense and only so many draft picks to get everything sorted. The Jets appear to be putting all of their faith in the coaching staff, and less so in their ability to bring in talent.

With that many weak points on their roster, ESPN’s Matt Miller believes the Jets are the biggest wild card in the NFL draft. Miller writes:

With no clear-cut No. 1 need on a roster that has many holes, the Jets could really select any position outside of quarterback with the No. 7 pick. There has been speculation about trading Breece Hall, so drafting a running back is something we can't rule out — even if that seems wild. Wide receiver, tight end, offensive line and cornerback are also conceivable options. Since the Jets are under a new regime with first-time general manager Darren Mougey, there's no historical data to rely on when projecting what they'll do. This could be the first surprise pick in the top 10.

Miller isn’t wrong. While I believe the Jets’ choice will come down to right tackle Armand Membou, the right tackle out of Missouri or Tyler Warren, the tight end from Penn State University, there are a lot of ways the Jets could go. The unknowns are just too great when it comes to the new regime.

This will be the first draft run by new Jets GM Darren Mougey. With no prior drafts to draw from, at this point all we can do is speculate. The Jets could go in a lot of different directions, and Mougey could justify almost any of them.

While most believe the Jets will take an offensive player with their first pick, it is a very real possibility that they take a defensive player. There has been talk about them trading Breece Hall and taking a running back in a loaded running back class. I think that would be a foolish move, but I haven’t agreed with anything the Jets have done this offseason.

What is stop the Jets from drafting a quarterback in the first round if they feel there is one worth taking? In fact, Justin Fields was asked about that very possibility and didn’t have any more information than anyone else.

The draft is less than two weeks away, and as far as I’m concerned, the whole draft board is wide open to Darren Mougey and the New York Jets. The only thing that is certain, is the Jets need some good players or this regime won’t last very long.
