The NFL changed the kickoff rules drastically for the upcoming season and the New York Jets are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding a way to maximize their abilities in that phase of the game.
The Jets drafted not one, but two running backs in this year’s draft, both of whom already have kick return potential, they brought in Tarik Cohen, who has somewhat of a return specialist in the past and that is before I even mention Xavier Gipson, who won the job outright last year ahead of Mecole Hardman.
Now the Jets have another name to add to the list, Jakeem Grant.
The Jets are bringing in the 31-year-old to mini-camp on a tryout basis according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Grant is a former Pro Bowl kick returner and two-time second-team All-Pro, with the latter coming in 2020 with the Miami Dolphins and in 2021 for the Chicago Bears. In March of 2022, Grant signed a three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. He was placed on injured reserve in August of that year after injuring his Achilles tendon during practice.
In the final game of the 2023 preseason, Grant was carted off with a knee injury. He was diagnosed with a ruptured patellar tendon and was placed on injured reserve on August 27, 2023, ending his season.
When the Jets signed Cohen a few weeks ago, head coach Robert Saleh explained the importance of kick returners given the new rules. “With the new kickoff rules and these kick returners, they’re going to touch the ball over 100 times a year, which is significant,” Saleh said. “At least that’s what we’re anticipating.”
Grant has four career punt return touchdowns and two career kick return touchdowns, amassing 5,130 all-purpose yards. He is one of the more dangerous kick returners in the league when healthy, but injuries have derailed a large portion of his career.
National outlet believes Jets have more talent at one position than the rest of the NFL
When the Robert Saleh took over as the head coach of the New York Jets, the Jets were boasting a defensive back group that was led by Bryce Hall and Bless Austin. They drafted a relatively unknown in the fifth round out of Duke in Michael Carter II to be a project for the new […]
