The Aaron Rodgers era is over after two seasons on the New York Jets. On Sunday, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported that the new leadership structure has decided and informed Rodgers that they are moving on.
The details are not clear at this point, but Rodgers can be released. If the most likely scenario is confirmed, the Jets will have $49 million in dead money—or $14 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026 if the team uses a post-June 1st designation.
There's also a scenario where the Jets are able to trade Aaron Rodgers to another team, which would acquire a relatively decent $37.5 million salary in the last year of his deal. The dead money for the Jets would be the same, but with some draft compensation and without the chance of applying a post-June 1st designation.
Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey were reportedly open to keep Rodgers, but they will ultimately go in another direction.
Disappointment
The Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in 2023 for a package that included a 2023 first-round swap, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2024 conditional first-round pick—however, that pick ended up being a second-rounder after Rodgers got hurt.
In 2023, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in his fourth snap with the Jets, missing the rest of the season.
This past season, Rodgers started all 17 games, but the Jets went 5-12. The veteran quarterback completed 63% of his passes for 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, a 90.5 passer rating.
Rodgers is 41.
