The New York Jets are going to be almost completely unrecognizable from the 2024 team after just one offseason with new GM Darren Mougey and new head coach Aaron Glenn leading the organization. The Jets will have new faces all over the team. They got rid of Aaron Rodgers on defense. Most of the defensive line has left and the special teams will be completely revamped.
Earlier in the offseason, the Jets cut kicker Greg Zuerlein and punter Thomas Morested and today the Jets cut ties with kicker Anders Carlson, who joined the Jets last November. He appeared in five games before being cut and he returned to the team on a future contract after the end of the regular season.
Carlson was 8-of-10 on field goals and 9-of-11 on extra points for the Jets. He also went 5-of-5 on field goals and 3-of-4 on extra points in two games for the 49ers and served as the kicker for the Packers for the entire 2023 season.
Now competing for the Jets starting kicker spot are UDFA Caden Davis out of Ole Miss and newly signed Harrison Mevis. The former Missouri Tigers football standout was nicknamed the ‘Thiccer Kicker’ during his time in Columbia, which is just a fantastic name. He earned the name early in his Mizzou career due to his unusual size for his position which stands at 5 foot 11, 243 pounds. The name earned him several NIL deals over the course of his career, including a burger named after his famous moniker at Campus Bar and Grill in downtown Columbia.
After graduating from Missouri, Mevis went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft but was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers. He was eventually waived after incumbent kicker Eddy Pineiro won the starting job. Afterwards, Mevis caught on in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions.
Mevis was 20-of-21 on field-goal attempts in the regular season for the Stallions, which was the second-best conversion percentage (95.2%) in the UFL behind just former Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, who went 21-of-22 (95.4%).
Mevis is not only accurate, but he has a big leg (as you can imagine by the name). He had a 56-yard long this season in Birmingham, and his only miss came from 63 yards. While at Missouri, Mevis broke the SEC record with a 61-yard field goal as time expired to knock off Kansas State in September 2023. He is the all-time points leader in Mizzou’s history with 405-career points
The Jets seem to think there is something good happening in Columbia, Missouri as Mevis joins the roster with a couple of his former teammates, Armand Membou, the Jets first round pick this season and Brady Cook, the Mizzou QB who is looking to earn a spot as an UDFA.
