The New York Jets have their quarterback for 2025, and it’s one they passed on in 2021.

The Jets have signed Justin Fields to a two-year deal worth $40 million and $30 million guaranteed.

AtoZ Sports’ Pittsburgh Steelers Writer Rob Gregson had this to say about Fields joining the Jets.

Fields is unlikely to miraculously turn into a franchise quarterback heading into his fifth NFL season. But he’s the perfect bridge quarterback with starting capabilities. He played some of the best ball of his career during his six-game stretch with the Steelers in 2024. Recently turning 26 years old, his legs still make him a headache for defense. There were times when the Steelers were in 3rd & 7+ and they kept the chains moving simply because of Fields legs. He developed his accuracy and his deep ball is noteworthy. If he can clean up his process, you have a viable signal caller for multiple years. For the Jets, Fields gives them a stop gap or bridge QB until they find their next franchise guy. He raises the floor of the offense and helps a rushing attack that is already strong with Breece Hall. If he can speed up his process, the Jets have a chance to be a viable offense with a big three of Wilson, Hall and Fields.

Rob is much higher on Fields than I am. Fields was drafted by the Chicago Bears 11th overall back 2021. The Jets famously took Zach Wilson that year second overall. In my opinion, signing Fields now is the worst decision the Jets have made since selecting Wilson that season.

Fields is the definition of “fool’s gold”. He wins ugly games because of his ability to run. He can’t command an offense or sustain success.  He is an athlete and a gadget player and not an NFL quarterback.  The Jets would do better with Tyrod Taylor at the helm.

The Jets did what the Jets do and ignored all of the red flags associated with this guy for the sake of making a splash signing. The Bears decided he wasn’t good enough. The Steelers despite winning game after game thought it in the best interest of their team to sit Fields in favor of Russell Wilson.

Now the Jets are going to ask a first-year offensive coordinator to somehow develop an offense centered around a quarterback that can’t pass the ball. The running game suffered a blow today with the loss of right tackle Morgan Moses to the divisional rival Patriots. If Fields happens to get hurt (a statistical likelihood considering the amount he is forced to run) then the Jets will turn back to Tyrod Taylor and must reinvent the offense again.

Many will point to his connection with wide receiver Garrett Wilson as one of the reasons this will be a good signing and to them I would say, “this isn’t college football.”  While Wilson has shown he has what it takes to be an NFL wide receiver, Fields has shown nothing of the sort when it comes to being an NFL quarterback.

The Jets will win some games thanks to Fields’ legs, but they are going to continue to be a push over in the division and conference. This was a panic signing looking to end a playoff drought instead of build a team and it is another chapter in the long history of why Woody Johnson and the Jets will never be a dominant franchise.
