The New York Jets have found their new general manager to pair with new head coach Aaron Glenn as the two look to turn this franchise around.
Assistant GM with the Denver Broncos Darren Mougey has reportedly agreed to terms with the Jets to be the new head General Manager in New York.
At just 39-years old, Mougey is the youngest Jets general manager, since Mike Tannenbaum was hired in 2006. Tannenbaum notably helped spearhead the search for a new GM this offseason.
Mougey is one of the NFL's fastest-rising executives, having gone from area scout to assistant general manager in just three years. A former college quarterback and tight end at San Diego State, Mougey stands at 6-foot-6. He was roommate with Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and the two are often compared to each other because of their laid-back demeanor.
He began his post-playing career as a scouting intern with the Denver Broncos in 2012.
He was both a collegiate and professional scout before becoming the team's assistant director of college scouting in 2020. In 2021, when George Paton took over as the Broncos' general manager, he chose not to part ways with Mougey, despite getting rid of a lot of other executives in the building. Instead, Paton promoted Mougey to the role of director of player personnel. He was once again promoted to assistant general manager in 2022 and has been in that role since.
Mougey has developed a strong reputation with Broncos head coach Sean Payton, a longtime mentor of Glenn. Payton's input no doubt contributed to Glenn and the Jets' decision to hire Mougey.
I think this is a good hire for the Jets. He isn’t someone that is getting the job simply for being around a lot, but because he has shown talent for the position he is in. Mougey is said to have an eye for talent which is something the Jets will need as they attempt to enter a strange phase in the team’s history. There is a lot of talent on the Jets roster with a glaring hole at quarterback that isn’t easily fixed.
One of his first and most important tasks will be to decide if Aaron Rodgers should return to the fold for the Jets in 2025, and if so, convince him to stay. Not an easy way to start off your general managing career, especially dealing with one of the worst owners in sports, but I have confidence he can get the job done.
***Note: As of January 25, this hiring has not been made official
New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has all the tools to navigate a unique situation
The New York Jets have found their man. And while I wouldn’t label it as a home run hire, it was certainly the best available to them. The Aaron Glenn hire is no surprise, and after losing out on Mike Vrabel to the New England Patriots, this was likely the top candidate on the Jets […]
