The New York Jets have lost a player that spent the first part of their season on the active 53-man roster. On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns signed rookie tight end Brenden Bates off the Jets' practice squad to their active roster.

The roster move was possible because the Browns placed star running back Nick Chubb on the injured reserve, ending his season.

Brenden Bates was an older prospect, and he's already 25. He went undrafted and was signed by the Chicago Bears, where he spent his first NFL training camp.

Bates was waived by the Bears as part of the final cuts, and the Jets claimed him off waivers on August 28. During the season, the rookie played 26 offensive snaps and 29 special teams snaps. Even though he was active in five games, he didn't record any catches.

Depth

With the move, the Jets will have two open practice squad spots. The tight end room, though, got thinner. The team has Tyler Conklin, Jeremy Ruckert, and Kenny Yeboah on the 53-man roster, plus last year's seventh-round pick Zack Kuntz on the practice squad.

Since the Jets' decision to fire Joe Douglas, Phil Savage has been the interim general manager. He had been a senior personnel advisor on the team since 2019.
