Jets lose out on prize free agent guard Kevin Dotson before free agency begins

Kevin Dotson, we hardly knew you. Or rather, we never knew you.
The New York Jets, who are poised to add not one, not two, but three offensive linemen this offseason lost out on one of the best before they even had the chance to make their pitch.
Los Angeles Rams guard Kevin Dotson agreed to a new deal that will keep him with the team just days before the NFL legal tampering period.
Dotson agreed to return to L.A. on a three year, $48 million contract that reportedly has $32million in guaranteed money. Dotson, a fourth-round pick in 2020, was one of the Rams' best acquisitions in 2023.
The Rams traded for Dotson during training camp, sending 2024 fourth-round and 2025 fifth-round picks to the Pittsburgh Steelers for Dotson and 2024 fifth-round and 2025 sixth-round picks.
The 27-year-old Dotson started 14 games for the Rams last season and ended the year as Pro Football Focus' second-ranked guard.
The Jets were likely going to be in on the Dotson sweepstakes had he hit free agency next week as they look to rebuild almost the entire offensive line. Dotson is considered one of the best guards in free agency alongside Robert Hunt from the Miami Dolphins, Kevin Zeitler from the Baltimore Ravens, Jonah Jackson from the Detroit Lions and Dalton Risner from the Minnesota Vikings.
New York will look at all of the available options next week as they look to protect their 40-year-old quarterback who is returning from his season-ending Achilles injury.
With the Jets needing three pieces along the offensive line, and Alijah Vera-Tucker's ability to play both guard and tackle, New York will likely be in the market for a guard or two in free agency. The free agent tackle class is weak while there are a handful of above average guards available.
Given that guards are also paid less than tackles, and the Jets are financially stretched, it would make sense to focus on guards in free agency rather than the more expensive tackles.
With one name already off the books, GM Joe Douglas will have to move quickly next week when he can begin negotiating with free agents or the Jets will be in for another long season.
Jets reportedly cut G Laken Tomlinson to save $8.1 million in cap space for 2024
The overhaul of the New York Jets offensive line has begun. The New York Jets are reportedly releasing guard Laken Tomlinson. Tomlinson was due to have a cap charge of $18.8 million for 2024. Cutting him will save the Jets roughly $8.1 million on the cap this season. The move is not entirely unexpected as […]
