It was cold in Northern New Jersey today and that was supposed to neutralize the Southern California Los Angeles Rams as they visited MetLife Stadium. But it was the Jets offense and special teams that were neutralized.
The Jets lost to the Rams by a final of 19-9 in a very empty stadium as temps were in the low 20's for most of the game. The loss drops the Jets to 4-11 and 2-5 at home on this very forgettable season. The Jets managed just one touchdown and one field goal against a Rams team that isn’t known for a stout defense. New York managed a meager 321 yards in the game.
Rodgers for his part was 28-42 for 268 yards and a touchdown. He lost a fumble the one time he was sacked in the game. The Jets couldn’t generate any running game against the Rams. Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Rodgers and Isiah Davis combined for 20 carries for 75 yards with a long of nine yards. Davante Adams doesn’t think the Jets offense struggled as much “as they struggled to score”.
It was another hum-drum performance for the Jets offense, something that the “crowd” (I find a half empty stadium not quite a full crowd, but you get the picture) MetLife Stadium is all but used to at this point in the season. On the other side of the ball, the defense played fairly well. They only gave up 242 yards, although Rams running back Kyren Williams rushed for 122 of them on 23 carries.
The offense wasn’t the only unit to struggle. The Jets missed both an extra point and a 48-yard field goal costing the team four easy points. Anders Carlson continues his inconsistent season for the Jets since taking over the kicking duties. He missed a field goal in each of the last two games and missed two extra points in the last three games. If the Jets were actually in the playoff hunt, this would be very concerning.
The Jets special teams also had a turnover late in the fourth quarter when Xavier Gipson fumbled a punt that cost Aaron Rodgers the opportunity to play hero again this season.
It was stupid mistakes, special teams miscues, costly turnovers, and bonehead penalties (the Jets had eight penalties for 62 yards) that buried the Jets against the Rams. All of which are so regular for this team, that it is almost like they are coached. After the game, Rodgers talked about how it’s always the little things that are killing this team.
As we go into the final three week of the season, many of the Jets players will be playing for their next contract, and auditioning for their next team. I believe Garrett Wilson will likely look to get away from the Jets this offseason, and I’m not sure I blame him. He is a young talented player who has known nothing but losing since hearing his name called on draft night.
Jeff Ulbrich doesn’t believe the Jets are going to quit on the season even with only three games left.
The Jets season was as big of a disappointment as I can remember this game was nothing more than another chapter in the very depressing book.
