The Seattle Seahawks did everything in their power to give the game to the New York Jets and the Jets did everything they could to give it right back. In the end, the Jets won the battle by giving the game to Seattle by a final of 26-21.
The Jets actually looked pretty good in the first half of the game. And I don’t just mean the score. The team looked amped. They looked fast. They looked strong. They looked like despite their awful record; they were having fun. The Jets got a big turnover on special teams and a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown. The offense looked creative, including a shovel pass to third string running back Isiah Davis for his first ever touchdown.
They went into halftime up 21-16 and looking close to the team we were promised two years ago. But the second half saw the return of the Jets of the last few games. The last few seasons. The last few decades.
The Jets were held scoreless in the second half and allowed just enough points to allow the Seahawks to take the lead and ultimately the game. Once again, Aaron Rodgers had the ball in his hands needing a score to turn a loss into a win and like so many times this season, he failed.
Rodgers finished the day 21 for 39 for 189 yards. What was obvious was how much Rodgers seemed to be looking for his BFF Davante Adams. He saw 12 targets in the game. First and 10? Throw it to Adams? Fourth and two? Throw it deep to Adams? Jets on defense? Throw it on the sidelines with Adams.
What else was obvious was they were not on the same page despite all the targets. Adams caught only five of the 12 targets for a measly 66 yards.
In a further attempt to give Seattle the game, the Jets committed a dozen penalties for 83 yards. A few of those penalties extended drives for the Seahawks ultimately allowing them to take the lead. The Jets had too many men on the field when Seattle lined up for a punt on fourth and six around midfield. Anybody who followed the Jets for any amount of time know what happened next. The Jets committed another penalty on fourth and one to give Seattle the first down.
Later in the drive the Jets had Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet stuffed on fourth and one, but a horse collar tackle by Solomon Thomas gave Seattle another first down. There is only so much that good teams can overcome, let alone bad teams like the Jets.
In the end, the Jets did what they have done time and time again this season and allowed teams to hang around with stupid penalties and bad plays and watched their 40-year-old quarterback fail to find any type of late-game magic to pull out a win.
Only five more games to go.
