Davante Adams' tenure with the New York Jets lasted 11 games. On Tuesday, the team officially released the 32-year-old wide receiver, making him an unrestricted free agent ahead of the new league year next week.
Since the official move to release Adams came before the new league year, the Jets won't use a post-June 1st designation. The team will have $8.362 million in dead money, but saves almost $30 million in cash and cap space.
The Jets acquired Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders in October ahead of the deadline trying to salvage an already lost season. The veteran did play well, even though it wasn't enough for the team to make the playoffs. In 11 games for the Jets, Davante had 67 catches, 854 yards, and seven touchdowns.
After the Jets decided to part ways with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, it was always obvious that Davante wouldn't be around much longer.
His contract model designed 2025 to be an inflection point, because it was basically a three-year deal with two overpriced option years to inflate his yearly average. For Adams to stay, he would have to agree to a revised deal.
However, it makes much more sense for Adams to be released and enter the free market to decide his future and how much money he will be able to get. That's ultimately why the Jets weren't able to trade him.
A second-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2014, Davante Adams took some time to develop but eventually became one of the best wide receivers of his generation. He made the First-Team All-Pro three times, and the Pro Bowl six times. Twice, he was the NFL's receiving touchdowns leader.
After eight years in Green Bay, he was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, and moved to the Jets two and half seasons later.
At 32, Adams is a free agent for the first time in his career. And after a strong performance down the stretch for the Jets, it's easy to foresee a solid market for his services.
