Jets have an obvious decision to make with Breece Hall and they don’t have a choice
The Jets currently sit at a respectable 1-1 record after defeating the Tennessee Titans 24-17 on Sunday. The game certainly wasn’t pretty, but as so many in my comments pointed out “a win is a win”. I tend to look beyond simple results and focus on more than just the final score. So, with that […]
The Jets currently sit at a respectable 1-1 record after defeating the Tennessee Titans 24-17 on Sunday. The game certainly wasn’t pretty, but as so many in my comments pointed out “a win is a win”. I tend to look beyond simple results and focus on more than just the final score. So, with that in mind, something stood out to me when watching the Jets offense: Aaron Rodgers is not the quarterback he was winning back-to-back MVP’s.
Now, before you think this is another doom and gloom article about how bad the Jets offense is, let me say that I believe the Jets can still win a lot of games with Rodgers at the helm, they just will have to go about it a different way. Rodgers doesn’t have the physical abilities he had a few years ago, that much is clear so far. He still has a fantastic arm, but his legs to escape the pocket and make throws on the run are not there. Rodgers’ football IQ is so high that he will need to outthink his opponents and use the weapons he has at his disposal.
Which brings me to my main point. The Jets offense needs to revolve around Breece Hall. Now, I know what you are thinking, “isn’t that what they tried to do with Zach Wilson and it didn’t work”. Aaron Rodgers, even 40-years-old and coming off an Achilles injury, is not Zach Wilson. Rodgers’ mind and ability to make important throws will be the difference in the offense.
Hall is a true do-it-all back. He can run outside or between the tackles. He can catch a swing pass or line up on the outside like we saw yesterday.
And that play happened because Hall recognized a mismatched, told Rodgers, and they changed it up on the fly. Zach Wilson would have simply run the play that was called and we would have been deprived of that highlight.
Hall finished the day with 114 total yards and that touchdown. Considering New York ended the day with only 265 yards of offense, they may have already realized how the offense needs to run.
The emergence of rookie Braelon Allen may be the key in keeping Breece fresh throughout the game. Allen had 56 total yards and two touchdowns of his own. Allen, a violent running, big back has some work to do in the passing game but could provide invaluable in spelling Hall and punishing defenders.
As the Jets offense tries to find itself, the ideal course of action is to lean on Breece. Rodgers completed half of his 18 completions versus the Titans to his running backs suggesting that outside of Garrett Wilson (who got four receptions), Rodgers doesn’t trust any of his other targets.
The idea is simple, the commitment to it and the execution of it are not. The Jets have a short week to figure it out.
Jets can’t fold to Haason Reddick after former first rounder’s season ending injury
The New York Jets and those damn Achilles tendons. Last season the Jets famously lost Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles just four plays into the season. A few games later, do-it-all offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker went down with the same injury. The injury put both players on a long and difficult road to recovery, […]
