They gave a valiant effort, but the New York Jets lost their 2025 season opener to the Pittsburgh Steelers by a 34-32 final score.

Quarterback Justin Fields was the driving force of the Jets’ offense, completing 72 percent of his passes for 218 yards and one touchdown. He also added 12 carries for 48 yards and two rushing TDs.

Justin Fields is our Jets Player of the Game for Week 1

Fields has a lot to prove this season, and despite the loss, he showed a lot of promise and grit against his former team in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, he didn’t get a ton of help from his offensive line as he was sacked four times and had to make several throws under duress.

That will be an obstacle Fields will have to overcome in 2025, especially with guard Alijah Vera-Tucker out for the season with torn triceps. As a response, the Jets have moved Joe Tippmann to guard and Josh Meyers to center.

As he showed on Sunday, Fields’ mobility will help mask some of New York’s offensive line woes. Hopefully the unit will gel over the course of the season. If it does, Fields will have the opportunity to grow into a legitimate starting NFL QB.

The schedule doesn’t let up anytime soon for the Jets, with the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on deck. Fields will need to keep the momentum of his performance against the Steelers to give his team a chance to win against the better teams in the league.

One silver lining is that both the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots also lost their Week 1 matchups. If the Bills lose to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football, every team in the AFC East will be 0-1, keeping the division wide open.
