The Aaron Glenn era officially gets underway today.

The New York Jets are one of three teams who officially kick-off their offseason workout programs today. The Jets along with the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears the team’s NFL offseason workouts because they have new head coaches. Teams with new head coaches are allowed to begin their programs two weeks before all other teams.

Don’t get too excited about seeing Justin Fields throwing deep balls to Garrett Wilson just yet, despite what the New York Jets X account would have you believe.

Offseason workouts for NFL teams come in three phases, and we are only entering phase one of the offseason program. Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual or group instruction and drills, as well as "perfect play drills," and drills and plays with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, conducted at a walk-through pace. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.

Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or "OTAs". No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Phase three is when we will start to see some real on the field stuff. That is where the highlight reels will start to get posted with the players making nice throws against air and making acrobatic catches on the sidelines.

Players are only required to be in attendance during mandatory minicamp, the rest are voluntary.

The Jets still have a long way to go before they can put a competitive team on the field. But with the emphasis on coaching as they have as opposed to talent, it will be nice to see Aaron Glenn getting his first crack at shaping the team into one that could make Jets’ fans proud.
