The New York Jets are bringing back a familiar face, amid rumors surrounding their plan at quarterback.

Jets create reunion with trade for QB Geno Smith

According to Adam Schefter, the Las Vegas Raiders are trading quarterback Geno Smith to the Jets. New York will also receive a 2026 7th-round pick, while Las Vegas gets a 2026 6th-round pick in exchange.

Schefter also notes that he is expected to be the team’s starting QB next season, with an eye on the 2027 quarterback draft class. The Jets will not be able to land Fernando Mendoza, the top-ranked QB in this year’s class. The Raiders are expected to select him at No. 1 overall.

Via Tom Pelissero, the Raiders are paying the bulk of Geno Smith’s salary to facilitate this trade. The Jets will get Smith for a little over the league minimum. It is a deal that makes deal for both sides, as both teams look for a new beginning.

Smith agreed to restructure his contract before the trade was agreed to.

For the Jets, this is a unique situation. He returns to the organization that drafted him in 2013 over a decade later. While the first time around was a balance of both Smith’s struggles and team failure, New York is hoping that Smith can provide veteran leadership and be a bridge QB for the org.
