The New York Jets made major splashes in what was a historic NFL trade deadline by shaking their roster upside down and shocking fans with bold moves.

The Jets are clearly still far away from becoming true contenders, with many roster holes and more rebuilding left to do. Instead of keeping their young talent and building around it like many other teams have, they’re deciding to strip it down and go all-in on a rebuild with a haul of ammo.

Fans will hate to see players like Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams go, but the payoff could be worth it if the Jets execute their rebuild properly.

The Jets shock the NFL world by trading Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams

The roster has been rough for the Jets, but they did have top young talent to build around, but not as much anymore after sending away two of their star players. The Jets traded Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for two first-round picks and WR AD Mitchell, who was a second-round pick just last season. Why trade Gardner after they just extended him, though?

The Jets worked the contract to where it was very tradeable, and they couldn’t turn down two first-round picks. His signing bonus was around $13.75 million, and he has a $20 million option bonus for 2026, which now belongs to the Colts. The Jets will save cash, salary cap, and accepted an offer they simply couldn’t refuse.

Williams was another young piece they moved, and Jerry Jones paid up a price they couldn’t turn down. The Dallas Cowboys sent over a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith, who was a first-round pick in 2023 that needed a change of scenery. Getting that kind of haul is hard to turn down, even if Williams is still uber talented. But now the pressure is on, and those picks have to become a contender roster over the next two years for general manager Darren Mougey.

The rebuild starts now for the Jets

Mougey wasted no time in his first NFL trade deadline by showing their plans of rebuilding the roster with valuable picks. Teams paid a hefty price for Gardner and Williams, and now the Jets have enough ammo to find their quarterback and draft a loaded roster if they make the right picks.

The Jets have five first-round picks over the next two drafts, which is insane, and now have two second-round picks for 2026 as well. That’s more than enough ammo to either draft a quarterback in 2026 like Fernando Mendoza, Ty Simpson, or Dante Moore, or even trade for another quarterback on another team like Kyler Murray, which they shouldn’t do.

Finding your young franchise quarterback solves a lot of your problems, as we’ve already seen with Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and Bo Nix, and that’s priority number one. The Jets also need to use those other picks to build a support cast and replace Gardner and Williams, while building around remaining talent like Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, Jermaine Johnson II, and Armand Membou.

The moves were absolutely shocking and will take some time to recover from for the fan base, but the Jets can fix everything if they build a roster for long-term success moving forward, including a franchise quarterback, finally. Remember what happened the last time the Jets had that many first-round picks.
