It is one thing to earn the respect of the fans. It is even harder to earn the respect of the media. But the ultimate test is earning the respect of your competition. For the 2023 New York Jets, check, check and check.
Recently, the Jets got a very vocal expression of respect from perhaps the best player in their division: Josh Allen.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated following the announcement of him becoming the cover boy for the new Madden game, Josh Allen had very high praise about the team that finished in 4th in the AFC East last season.
Speaking with Robin Lundberg, who used to host radio in New York, Allen spoke about how the Jets are absolutely a team to worry about this season and will be a tough early season test. “They’re game one. That’s the only team I’m worried about right now,” Allen said.
The Jets host the Buffalo Bills in week 1 on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium in what will be Aaron Rodgers’ first game for gang green.
“I’m such a big fan of Aaron. I grew up such a big fan of him,” Allen said. “I think he’s done so much for the game of football. You see a lot of quarterbacks who are younger throughout the league, and there’s a lot of his game that everyone tries to emulate.”
Rodgers brings instant success and credibility to the Jets who managed to defeat the Bills 20-17 in week nine despite less than stellar quarterback play from Zack Wilson. The Bills got some revenge in Buffalo in week 14 beating the Jets 20-12.
Allen seemed to have trouble against the Jets highly vaunted defense. The Bills averaged 28.4 points a game scored only 17 and 20 vs Robert Saleh’s defense in 2022.
It’s no stretch to say if the Jets plan to win the AFC East and host at least one playoff game, the road likely goes thru Buffalo (with maybe a quick stop in Miami).
The Bills finished last season 13-3 winning the AFC East and defeating divisional foe Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round. The Bills lost in the divisional round to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-10.
The Bills enter 2023 with the third best odds to win the Super Bowl at +900, only behind the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs who are +600 and the runner up Philadelphia Eagles sitting at +800. The Jets meanwhile sit at +1400, the 7th best odds to win it all.
