Yesterday, we reported that the Jets made a significant move at safety by signing Adrian Amos from Green Bay Packers to a one-year deal worth $4 million. Today the reason for the signing becomes much clearer.

Chuck Clark has suffered a serious knee injury, one that the team believes could end his season even before it begins.

The Jets traded for Clark in March for a late-round draft pick in the 2024 draft going to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for the 28-year-old.

Clark had spent his first six seasons with the Ravens after they drafted him in the sixth round out of Virginia Tech in the 2017 NFL draft. Since entering the starting lineup in Baltimore, Clark became a fixture on the Ravens defense starting 96 out of 97 games and not missing a defensive snap since 2021.

Clark became frustrated with the Ravens after they drafted standout safety Kyle Hamilton out of Notre Dame in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Just the situation I was put in, things that was said to me, the position I felt I was on the team, I wasn’t respected at the time,” Clark said. “So it was time for a change.”

Clark is also a standout off the field as well. Last season he was the Ravens’ Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

The Jets had high hopes for Clark, who impressed the coaches with a cerebral approach and steady demeanor. Clark was expected to start alongside Jordan Whitehead this offseason and was playing alongside him during recent practices. Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said recently the on-field relationship between Clark and Whitehead was "exceptional."

This is exactly the kind of player that GM Joe Douglas covets and why it was huge win for the Jets in March when they landed Clark. Douglas loves guys who are leaders on and off the field and players who can be counted on to show up on the field.

The injury, first reported by The Athletic, could be season-ending. Clark will seek a second opinion, the source said, but the preliminary results are grim.

Now the Jets pivot to Adrian Amos, who will look to lock down the strong safety spot next to Jordan Whitehead.

This injury is a reminder to fans of how quickly a season can turn. While going from Clark to Amos isn’t a headline stealer, it shows how one injury can change a position or a unit. We don’t know what the Jets defense would have looked like in 2023 with Chuck Clark, but it was the Jets first choice. Adrian Amos is next man up.
