The touchdown drought might be over, but the problems for the offense still loom large for the Jets.
The Jets lost after an embarrassing offensive showing to the Buffalo Bills by a final score of 32-6 in Western New York. The Jets finally ended their touchdown drought in the second quarter after Zach Wilson hit Breece Hall for a nine-yard touchdown.
The Jets didn’t sniff another score after that. Robert Saleh said of the offense, "I don't think anyone did anything today. Players, coaches, schemes. It was obviously not good enough. None of it was good enough."
The big change that many fans have been hoping for finally came late in the third quarter when Saleh benched the struggling Zach Wilson in favor of Tim Boyle.
Wilson was terrible again today going 7 for 15 for 81 yards, an interception, and the lone touchdown pass to Hall. Wilson did not complete a single pass to a wide receiver in the game.
To his credit, after the game Wilson admitted that he understands why he got benched. “I’m frustrated, but I get it. Gotta score. Gotta be in games. When it’s consecutive weeks of just doing nothing on offense…when things aren’t getting done changes have to be made,” Wilson said after the game.
Wilson was not good but was not the only problem on the offense. The offensive line was simply overmatched against a very good Bills pass rush. The Bills sacked Wilson five times and added another one against Boyle.
Jets wide receivers were no able to get open all game, and when they finally did find some space, the pass rush had already put Wilson or Boyle on their backs. There was no running game to be had as Hall and Cook combined for 12 rushes for 36 yards.
Boyle was not much better in his quarter plus of playing time going 7 for 14 for 33 yards and an interception. The best quarterback of the day for the Jets was punter Thomas Morstead who completed one pass on a fake punt for 18 yards and a first down, which was close to being a much bigger play if Brandin Echols didn’t step out after making the catch.
With the Jets getting ready to face the AFC East leading Miami Dolphins on a short week, the question now becomes, who will start at quarterback? Robert Saleh, who has been steadfast in his support for Zach Wilson almost to the point of being comical, would not commit to who would be under center on Friday against the Dolphins.
"I'm not ready to answer any of those questions yet,” Saleh said when asked who would start going forward. As for when Saleh would make the decision of who will start, it will have to happen pretty quickly. “Everything is accelerated. You don’t have Monday and Tuesday to dissect and breathe for a second. We’ll be pretty quick with [our decision]”
The Jets can’t go back to Zach Wilson. We have all the answers we need to what he can bring to the team. Tim Boyle isn’t the answer either. Boyle is a career backup with very little starting experience. The Jets need to start Trevor Siemian for the rest of the season.
