Jets’ Sauce Gardner gets called out in more ways than one

It’s been a busy few days for Jets’ cornerback Sauce Gardner.
After losing to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night football by a final score of 16-12, the Jets had a players only meeting which aired out a lot of the issues especially surrounding the offense. Sauce meanwhile, found himself getting it from all angles on social media and for very different reasons.
On the field, Sauce found himself to be the target of some criticism from a fellow defensive back in the league.
On the latest episode of Punch Line Pod with Marlon Humphrey, the three-time Pro Bowl cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens criticized Sauce for getting away with a lot of penalties.
When asked if there was a corner who gets away with more than others, Humphrey responded, “I’m not hating and this was last year, but Sauce got away with a lot last year. I mean a lot. A lot.”
Sauce, after seeing the video on X (formally twitter) responded in his own way.
I wouldn’t go as far as to call this a cheap shot by Marlon Humphrey, but I don’t understand the logic he uses to qualify why he believes Sauce would get preferential treatment by the leagues or referees.
Why would a referee give special treatment to a rookie who wasn’t even the first cornerback taken in the draft? That doesn’t make sense. I’m sure refs, like players, make young stars earn the respect before it is simply handed over.
The preferential treatment can’t come because of the team he plays for. Why would anyone assume the Jets get special treatment from the refs considering they went 27 games without a roughing the passer call go their way. The Jets went all of 2021 without one roughing the passer penalty called in their benefit.
The NFL called 93 roughing the passer penalties last season, but the Jets were the only team not to benefit from one. But a rookie out of the University of Cincinnati is getting special treatment? I don’t get it.
I’m not saying Sauce doesn’t do small things that might not be legal on the field, but I wouldn’t say he does more than any other DB. As Humphrey points out in the clip, there is holding along the offensive line on every play, but it is a matter of getting caught and to what degree. Seems like Sauce is keeping his actions under the threshold of a flag and Humphrey has some sour grapes about it.
On the other hand, Sauce made a startling revelation on X this week that should be the subject of a lot of criticism. He only tried New York style pizza for the first time this week.
The replies to this revelation are spectacular including one of my favorites that said, “Madden needs to drop his awareness down to 0”. As a native New Yorker myself, its mind-blowing that it took him this long for him to try a slice, but at least he had the correct response after trying it. New York is the only correct answer when talking about the best pizza.
And the best part of New York pizza? The Sauce. (Kidding, it’s the bread, but I had to say it)
Jets release running back Michael Carter
The Jets have been stagnant on offense for years and all but useless on offense for the last few weeks and it appears some players are going to start facing the music. Just maybe not the ones who deserve it. The Jets announced today that they released running back Michael Carter, a fourth-round pick from […]
