The pipeline of players from Green Bay to Florham Park continues to produce.
Sources indicate that free agent safety Adrian Amos is headed to Jets on a 1-year deal which could be up to $4 million.
Amos joins a secondary that includes safeties Jordan Whitehead and Chuck Clark who the Jets traded for earlier in the off season from the Baltimore Ravens.
The move comes with no shock as the Jets have been looking for ways to upgrade the safety position after Lamarcus Joyner and Whitehead were less than stellar in their first seasons with gang green.
This is also the latest move in which a former Green Bay Packer has jumped ship to the New York Jets. Amos joins former teammates Aaron Rodgers, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Billy Turner along with former Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett to make the move from Wisconsin to the New York area.
The 30-year-old Amos started every game over the past four seasons and finished in the top three in tackles for Green Bay in each of those years. Last season he raked up 102 tackles. Amos also raked up 10 interceptions over his four-year span with the Packers.
The Jets secondary, which was a glaring weakness on the team just two years ago, now ranks as one of the top units in the NFL. To go along with Amos, Clark and Whitehead are standout corners Sauce Gardner and sneaky superstar DJ Reed.
The Jets have to faceoff against the explosive Dolphins and Bills twice this season to go along with the Chiefs, Eagles and Chargers who can all put points on the board thru the air. Amos is another addition to keep the Jets defense near the top of the list.
Adding another starting caliber safety was a must for the Jets this off season. It was clear that Whitehead and Joyner were not living up to the expectations the Jets had when they signed them.
Amos isn’t a guy who is going make the highlight reel often, but he is the model on consistency at the position, racking up tackles in bunches and never missing a game. He's one of only four defensive players in the NFL to start all 82 regular-season games over the past five years, joining Kevin Byard, Leonard Floyd and Devin McCourty.
Amos is a solid acquisition by Joe Douglas and the Jets. He fills a position of need while not being a large hit against the cap.
Up next for Joe Douglas is to address Quinnen Williams’ contract and sign an outside linebacker. All reports lean that both will get done some time in the next few weeks.
