It wasn't quite the deal Jets fans wanted at the trade deadline but it was certainly a much needed one.

As the clock ticked down on the NFL Trade Deadline at 4 p.m. Eastern, the Jets had not made a move despite some glaring holes on the roster and some glaring players that needed to be moved.

The Jets opted not to make a trade and instead signed former two time Pro Bowl guard Rodger Saffold III to their practice squad and will likely sign him to the 53-man roster by Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Saffold was last seen with the Buffalo Bills last season. Saffold started every game last year but was the team’s least effective starter with a 43.8 PFF grade. He surrendered 30 pressures in 2022, the most on the team, while allowing four QB Hits, tied for second-most on the team.

The move came along with a flurry of other roster moves including putting Al Woods, Wes Schweitzer and Connor McGovern on IR and signing Hard Knocks fan favorite Tanzel Smart and offensive lineman Dennis Kelley to the active roster.

The 35-year-old Saffold was a second round pick by the Rams in 2010.  In 2019 he signed a four-year $44 million contract with the Tennessee Titans.  After being released by the Titans, Saffold signed with the Buffalo Bills.

The signing feels very similar to the Laurent Duvernay-Tardif trade the Jets made in 2021 when the brought the good doctor over from the Kansas City Chiefs.  It is not a splashy signing and it is one that has little risk and high reward.

The lack of any other deals along the offensive line must indicate that rookie Joe Tippmann is closer to returning that previously thought.

The Jets currently have five offensive linemen on IR, so at this point, anyone who is healthy enough to dress is an upgrade at a position of need.

Jets ugly win over Giants shows true trade need

Ok, that was ugly. The New York Jets won. The New York Giants lost. Nobody should be happy about it. There is very little that both teams should be happy about after that game. The Giants can say they hung around on a team despite being down to the third string QB, a guy who […]
