Jets' Wilson is impressive in victory over Texans

To paraphrase the great Eddie Murphy from his 1987 standup comedy special Raw, “If you are starving, and somebody throws you a cracker, you are going to think it’s the best cracker you ever ate.”

Jets fans were starving. The Jets offense was starving. And Zach Wilson threw everyone a Ritz cracker.

After a drama filled week of trying to determine who would be the starting quarterback, and who would want to be the starting quarterback, Zach Wilson returned to MetLife Stadium and put together arguably his best game of his career against the Houston Texans and the Jets won 30-6.

Wilson looked confident and poised and was decisive with the football, especially in the second half. Wilson finished the day 27 for 36 for 301 yards and two touchdowns. His only turnover was a fumble on a rain-soaked scramble where he simply didn’t tuck the ball away. He did not throw an interception.

“I thought Zach probably played the best game of his career,” Saleh said. “He was out there having a good time. He made a lot of things happen that weren't there. "I thought Zach Wilson had a great balance today. He was aggressive, but he was smart. Taking the check downs when he could, but being calculated with his opportunities, & he was outstanding. Hopefully he can find ways to build off of this one.”

This was just Wilson’s third game of going over 300 yards passing in his career. This was a glimpse of the Zach Wilson they thought they were drafting number two overall.

Both of Wilson’s touchdown passes came in the second half. The first half looked like more of the same 2023 Jets as the first half ended in a scoreless tie. That was the first time there was a scoreless first two quarters since San Francisco beat Washington 9-0 in Week 7 of the 2019 season (Note: the Raiders and the Vikings accomplished the same feat in the late window). Still, the feel of the offense was different, even with no point in the first half. Wilson just looked different.

The Jets finally broke through in the scoreless game on their opening drive of the second half when Wilson found Cobb for a 15-yard touchdown.

The suddenly offensive juggernaut Jets struck again on their next drive with Xavier Gipson taking a handoff and zipping into the end zone for a 9-yard score that made it 14-0. That would be New York's largest lead of the season to that point.

Garrett Wilson was quick to compliment the quarterback as well, “He balled. Put it all out there, throwing dots in the rain. Zach went crazy today.”

The Jets have some momentum going into their rematch with the Dolphins from Black Friday. For now, the Jets can enjoy a victory against a good team.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel talks with linebacker Jaelan Phillips (15) after an apparent injury during the second half against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

MetLife Stadium: More NFL players speak up on ‘trash’ turf

Another week, another major injury on the MetLife field turf. This time, it was Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips, who like Aaron Rodgers, tore his Achilles. Phillips was having a great season for a Dolphins defense that was coming into its own and starting to play really well, lately. The turf has been under fire […]
