Nobody wanted to give Josh Myers a starting job following his four-year stint with the Green Bay Packers, so the New York Jets were able to sign him to a one-year, $3 million contract in free agency this past offseason. After a successful first impression, the Jets are making sure they reward the former second-round pick.

According to ESPN, the Jets gave the interior offensive lineman a two-year, $11 million extension, with $6 million in total guarantees. The deal keeps Myers in New York through 2027.

Surprising role in 2025

Josh Myers was signed to be a backup center behind Joe Tippmann. But with Alijah Vera-Tucker’s season-ending injury, Tippmann was moved to guard. The decision to sign Myers was instrumental to give the offensive line more depth and flexibility, and the center has played 100% of the offensive snaps this season, in addition to 6.2% of the snaps on special teams.

Josh Myers is not necessarily a high-end starter, but he is a solid, starting-caliber center — and that brings enough value for the type of contract he signed. Through five NFL seasons, Myers has played 4,281 snaps at center.

For the Jets, Josh Myers has had a 53.6 PFF grade this season, including an average 56.9 pass block grade. He’s allowed 25 pressures, with a 97.2% efficiency, in addition to seven penalties.

Why the Jets are extending Josh Myers

The Jets will have some tough offseason decisions to make along the offensive line, and that’s why the team decided to jump ahead and give Josh Myers a mid-term extension. Alijah Vera-Tucker is a talented player, but he’s handled multiple injuries and is slated to be a free agent in 2026. Starting left guard John Simpson will also hit the market next offseason, just like backup linemen Max Mitchell, Chukwuma Okorafor, and Xavier Newman-Johnson. Tippmann enters the final year of his deal in 2026.

The only offensive linemen under contract with the Jets beyond next season are Armand Membou, Olu Fashanu, and Gus Hartwig. Now, Myers is another piece of that puzzle.
