After nine games this season, ten if you consider week 1, Zach Wilson's tenure as the New York Jets starting quarterback is over again. Head coach Robert Saleh has announced that Tim Boyle, another former Green Bay Packers passer, will start while Aaron Rodgers is still recovering from an Achilles injury.

The Jets know what they have in Tim Boyle, and that's why the change hasn't been made before. But they probably needed to do something, and the sixth-year player is their most feasible answer at this point.

Tim Boyle, however, has an insane touchdown to interception ratio, going back to his NCAA times. He played for UConn and Eastern Kentucky, finishing up his college career with 12 TDs and 26 INTs — for UConn, he had one TD and 13 INTs.

Boyle has been in the NFL since 2018. After three years backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, he spent one season and a half with the Detroit Lions and the end of last season with the Chicago Bears. He started three games for the Lions in 2021.

Considering all his 18 appearances in the NFL, Tim Boyle has had three touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Combining his college and pro stats, the quarterback has thrown 15 touchdowns and 35 interceptions, a 0.42 TD:INT ratio. Zach Wilson, for example, has 21 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in the NFL, a 0.84 TD:INT ratio.

The decision to sign Tim Boyle in the first place is related to the fact that the quarterback played two seasons under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in Green Bay. He knows the system, and could be a helpful backup to Rodgers and Wilson.

"I'm just thrilled and being around my people here," Boyle said after being signed. "Coach [Nathaniel] Hackett, obviously I've had a couple years with him, Allen Lazard, Adam Pankey, just the familiarity is going to be wonderful. I'm just excited to help build up the culture."

Transition

Zach Wilson was benched during the game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and finished it with 7/15 for 81 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Tim Boyle didn't play much better: 7/14, 33 yards, and an interception. Per PFF, though, Boyle had a 59.2 overall grade, against a 32.2 grade from Wilson.

Tim Boyle has a turnover-worthy play rate of 7.7%, which is extremely high. In comparison, Jameis Winston had a 5.4% rate in the season he threw 30 interceptions for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For Boyle, it's obviously a small sample size, but he's had only one big-time throw in the league — which means a 0.8% big-time throw rate.

The new starting quarterback signed a one-year, veteran minimum deal with the Jets. He's making $1.08 million this season.

Alternatives

Besides Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle, the Jets also have veteran Trevor Siemian on the practice squad. If they had decided to move on from Wilson earlier, there would have been more options on the open market, but Carson Wentz (Los Angeles Rams) and Joe Flacco (Cleveland Browns) have signed deals recently.
