The New York Jets designated quarterback Aaron Rodgers to return from injured reserve on Wednesday. The move opens a 21-day window for him to practice with his teammates without counting towards the 53-man roster.

New York media was able to spot Rodgers at practice, throwing and moving around.

In his first practice back, 79 days after rupturing his Achilles in week 1, Rodgers did light activities. On Tuesday, the quarterback had said on the Pat McAfee Show that he was not ready to play yet, and his real return to a game would depend on his rehabilitation process and if the Jets are still alive in the AFC playoff race.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh mentioned that Aaron Rodgers has been cleared for “functional football activity”. This doesn’t mean he will have enough time to recover this season, but it’s an important step.

“Aaron is not going to do anything that puts himself in harm’s way”, Saleh added.

Roster options

The Jets have three weeks to decide what to do with Aaron Rodgers, and they have three options after this period. The first one, and the Jets hope this is the outcome, they activate Rodgers to the 53-man roster at any point during the next 21 days and he is able to play again this season.

The second option is that the Jets activate Rodgers, but he’s not ready to play. So he would occupy a roster spot until he’s healthy.

The last alternative is that Rodgers doesn’t recover in time, or the team is virtually eliminated from contention, and the Jets opt to not activate the quarterback. In this case, Rodgers would revert back to the injured reserve and would not play again in 2023.

Quarterback depth

While Aaron Rodgers isn’t cleared to play, the Jets have three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. After the coaching staff decided to bench Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle is the starter — his first start was against the Miami Dolphins last Friday. Besides them, veteran Trevor Siemian was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad last week.
