CBS Sports recently made some predictions for where top free agents will sign this offseason and they have the Miami Dolphins making a high-profile addition.
The national sports media outlet thinks Miami needs to protect itself at the quarterback position. Tua Tagovailoa is "the guy" for the Dolphins. And Miami is committed to the former Alabama standout in 2023.
But because of Tagovailoa's injury history, he can't be counted on to play all 17 games (plus the post-season if the Dolphins reach the playoffs again) this upcoming season.
For that reason, CBS Sports has Miami signing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this spring.
They have a more immediate need at corner, where new coordinator Vic Fangio will attempt to revive their "D." But the Jimmy G connection makes too much sense: as much as this team is publicly committed to Tua Tagovailoa, the young QB cannot — and should not — be trusted to stay on the field. Garoppolo has his own availability concerns, but he's at least guided multiple playoff runs in the 49ers system from which Mike McDaniel hails. At the very least, he'd be premium insurance at a premium position.
I think this would be a great scenario for the Dolphins. When healthy, Tua is a star in the NFL. But staying healthy has been a problem. Tagovailoa has played 36 out of a possible 50 games so far during his three years in the NFL.
Adding Garoppolo to the roster would give Miami a backup quarterback that has started a Super Bowl — essentially, he'd be the best backup quarterback in the league.
The big question is whether or not Garoppolo would be on board with signing as a backup. There's no doubt he still wants to be a starter, but he might not find that opportunity in free agency.
Landing with the Dolphins — a team on the rise — would give Garoppolo a chance to prove himself as a starter again in the event that Tua is injured.
And who knows, if Tua's injury issues get worse, maybe the Dolphins turn to Garoppolo as their answer at quarterback for the next few seasons.
