Is this the most dramatic offseason in NFL history?
People always ask me why I watch Maury all the time. One of the answers is because I'm always home when it comes on and I can't stop watching it. The biggest reason though is the drama. It's the same reason I watch pro wrestling or basically any show on TV. The drama just brings […]
People always ask me why I watch Maury all the time. One of the answers is because I'm always home when it comes on and I can't stop watching it. The biggest reason though is the drama. It's the same reason I watch pro wrestling or basically any show on TV. The drama just brings you in and keeps you there.
Maybe it's because your life lacks the drama that you can get from the screen, or maybe it's to see that others are going through drama too. Maybe it's just to distract you from the drama that's going on in your life. Maybe it's a combination of all those things.
There's always a little bit of drama in the NFL. Maybe there's a hold out or two or something like that. This offseason seems a lot different though. If the NFL were a scripted show, the writers are going for broke this season when it comes to drama. It seems like you can't go a day without seeing something new. This has to be the most dramatic offseason of all time. Look at everything that's happened.
Gambling suspensions
Players getting suspended for gambling is nothing new. Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley got suspended last season for betting on NFL games. This year is a lot different though. Because many players have been suspended by the league this year due to the gambling outlets assisting the NFL in finding offenders.
Now it's not just betting on NFL games, it's betting in general. Lions receiver Jameson Williams got six games for betting on the National Championship game while at an NFL facility. By the way, we learned that nearly every place int he world is an NFL facility. Even the team bus.
Luckily the NFL is taking steps to teach the full policy to it's players. Maybe this won't be a problem next year.
An entire position being underpaid
The NFL is seriously undervaluing running backs this offseason and it's only getting worse. Some of the best players at the position have been having issues getting what they feel is a fair deal this offseason.
It's been so bad that the leagues top running backs are starting to band together on all of this. They recently held a zoom meeting together to discuss. There was a time when the running back position was of very high value but now you can find one very easily in the draft and only have to pay that player a rookie salary.
There's a solid chance that this spawns off some new markets for running backs that want to call themselves more than running backs. The position-less weapon market is probably on it's way.
Jonathan Taylor vs Jim Irsay
This one is in relation to the last one, but it's been super dramatic this past weekend. Taylor has been very outspoken about the the running back pay issue on social media. Jim Irsay decided to be outspoken too. The two had a meeting in Irsay's bus and then Taylor formally asked to be traded. It didn't stop there.
Suddenly Taylor "had a back injury" and the Colts started considering placing him on the NFI list. They don't have to pay Taylor if he's on that list. Taylor took to Twitter on Sunday night and said that he doesn't have a back injury and doesn't know where this information came from. It's only going to get worse from here.
Just Aaron Rodgers
The man needs to be to in the spotlight. With all this Jonathan Taylor drama taking all the cake this week, you almost expect Rodgers to go out and club a baby seal, or something, just to get back in the headlines.
It all started with his darkness retreat, then it was the trade that seemed like it would never get done until the Jets signed every player Rodgers wanted them to sign and now he's feuding with Sean Payton? What is next? At least he's not talking about horse de-wormer this year.
Derek Carr and the Raiders
This one was funny to me. The Raiders decided to sit Carr downt he stretch of the 2022 season. It was a clear statement that the Raiders plan to move on from Carr after the season. Carr was understandably not happy about this.
Here's where it gets funny. The Raiders tried to trade Carr to the Saints, but he has a no trade clause in his contract and he invoked it. The Raiders wound up releasing him, and he just went and signed with the Saints anyways. So he kept the Raiders from getting anything out of him and just went to the team they were trying to trade him to anyways. You have to love the spite.
Commanders sale
Maybe not drama in the traditional sense, but the league was just incredibly happy to get rid of Dan Snyder this summer. It was like that part of the season of television where the character you hate the most finally gets it's comeuppance. It was like when King Joffrey died on Game of Thrones.
Other drama
Here's some other stuff that happened this summer. Bill Belichick is suddenly on the hot seat, Stefon Diggs may or may not be unhappy, Lamar Jackson's fake agent and the new kickoff rule. There might be some stuff that I'm forgetting, but I'm only forgetting it because there's been so much stuff.
