Bailey Zappe had an impressive performance on Thursday night as the New England Patriots earned the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in primetime.
So when he came to the podium to speak with reporters after the game, he had a big smile on his face.
And after throwing three touchdowns in the first half, which is something that hadn't been done by a Patriot since Tom Brady in 2018, Zappe's efforts led New England to a narrow victory over the Steelers.
That prompted one reporter to ask if anyone in his "inner circle" had come to watch him play at Acrisure Stadium. Zappe's answer said it all.
"I had nobody. They all watched from home," Zappe said with a smile. "I don't want to pay for those tickets. I'm still on a rookie contract. That's a little expensive."
You can't blame him for that one.
Zappe's success started when he sent a short pass to Ezekiel Elliott who ran it into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown.
Jabrill Peppers than came away with another stellar defensive play, intercepting Mitch Trubisky and returning it for 32 yards, getting the ball to the Pittsburgh 11-yard line. Zappe took advantage, sending a pass to Hunter Henry for the second touchdown of the night.
And a little later, Zappe and Henry connected once again with a 24-yard touchdown.
So the celebration for his first win as a starter this season will have to wait until the Patriots get back to New England.
Patriots’ offensive explosion hasn’t been seen since Tom Brady
Things are finally looking up for the Patriots.
