After much controversy surrounding one popular rookie this season, he has decided to head elsewhere to finish the season.
On Tuesday it was reported that the Baltimore Ravens were signing quarterback and wide receiver Malik Cunningham off the Patriots practice squad.
This move had many upset, including his former teammates. And on Wednesday morning, Bill Belichick addresses what happened, starting with answering whether the team attempted to keep Cunningham on the practice squad.
"Yeah, but I think that they sold him on the opportunity, the offense. He and Lamar," Belichick said. "Certainly, their offense suits Malik better than probably any other offense in the league does."
The Ravens quarterback has been very complimentary of Cunningham, with the two both having played college ball at Louisville. They even played together during the 2017 season.
The opportunity to be on the active roster was too good to pass up after the Patriots truly did not take advantage of him while on the team.
He began the season on the practice squad, but was promoted to the active roster on Oct. 14. Just 10 days later, he was released and signed back to the practice squad.
Since being re-signed, he has been elevated twice, both times being when Bailey Zappe was named as the starter.
However, he hasn't taken a single snap during those games.
The Ravens appear to be giving him a greater opportunity to play, but Cunningham took a moment to thank the Patriots for all they have done.
"I wanted to thank Mr Kraft and Coach Belichick for giving me opportunity to play with the Patriots," Cunningham said in a statement to ESPN. "I learned a lot from them. I want to be a coach one day, so I would take notes from coach Belichick because he’s one of the greatest of all time. I had great teammates in New England and built relationships that will last a lifetime. But I just feel like this is a good opportunity for me and I’m excited to be a Baltimore Raven.”
