With an entirely new coaching staff, everybody in New England is getting a fresh start, and that apparently includes Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.
At least, that's what offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said.
However, this latest report changes things a little bit. And it is probably for the best.
According to The Athletic's Chad Graff and Jeff Howe, if the Patriots were to trade Jones this offseason, it would be seen as "a mutually beneficial move."
"People close to the team said Mac Jones could benefit from leaving the scar tissue that has built up with the Patriots over three offensive coordinators in three years, poor play and several benchings," Graff and Howe wrote. "And the Patriots seem eager to begin a new chapter with a young quarterback who might be better served with an older, veteran backup who’s enthusiastic about helping the young quarterback understand the game and life as a professional.
Jones had a promising rookie season, but took a serious decline his second and third year. And because of that, many believe that his time in New England came to an end when former head coach Bill Belichick decided to officially bench the quarterback in favor of Bailey Zappe.
It seems that there have been people close to Jones that wanted him to ask for a trade earlier in his career with New England.
Mac Jones' personal quarterback, Joe Dickinson, who has been working with Jones for 14 years, said that the quarterback should have asked for a trade after his first year.
With Josh McDaniels leaving to go to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Patriots inability to bring in weapons to surround Jones with on the offense, Dickinson could already see it was a recipe for disaster. And he was proven right.
While a trade has always been viewed as the best option for Jones, the Patriots have been pretty quiet on the whole thing. But while they wouldn't commit to anything publicly, it seems they know exactly what they are going to do.
Now they just have to follow through.
