The San Francisco 49ers won't be playing in Super Bowl LVII thanks to their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game, but that didn't stop one of their players from throwing some shade at Philly this week.
49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was asked this week during an appearance on "The SFNiners" about the Super Bowl matchup between the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Aiyuk said he thinks the Cheifs will win the game because he's not sure about Philadelphia having a good defense.
"I don’t know fully about that defense," said Aiyuk. "They talk about them being a good defense, I’m not sure. I think this Kansas City pass game will expose what we thought we were going to expose before some unfortunate circumstances. They got extremely lucky.”
To be fair to Aiyuk, he prefaced his comments with "I'm sitting on the couch, I have no room to talk about nobody playing next week".
That disclaimer, however, didn't make his comment about Philly's defense look any less silly.
The Eagles had the No. 8 scoring defense in the NFL in 2022. They're also five sacks away from setting an NFL record for most combined sacks in the regular season/playoffs.
(With Patrick Mahomes' mobility in question, it's not out of the question that Philly could record five sacks in the Super Bowl.)
It's obvious that the Eagles have an elite defense. Aiyuk just sounds bitter because his 49ers couldn't get the job done against Philly last week.
And look, I get that San Francisco had injuries to overcome — that game is probably a lot closer if Brock Purdy doesn't get hurt. But I still think the Eagles would've easily won the game.
Aiyuk's comments about Philly getting lucky just make him look bad. Sometimes you just have to take the L and move on. And that's what Aiyuk should've done this week instead of making excuses
