Philadelphia Eagles fans will not like what NFL insider Adam Schefter had to say about the latest update on the Tush Push debacle.
While speaking on his The Adam Schefter Podcast with Ty Schmit, Schefter recapped what NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell told reporters at the league meetings in Palm Beach, Florida while noting there are currently 16 teams against the Tush Push and they need just eight more to change or ban the play forever.
“I think if we go and we parse through what the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters at his post-league meeting press conference, I think it became pretty apparent that he and others want the tush push out of the game," Schefter said. "There are 16 votes that they've gotten. 16 teams willing to overturn the tush push and have it banned.
"The league needs 24 votes. And Roger Goodell is a master at getting the votes he needs for the issues he wants… Rest be assured, they're going to be working to get those 24 votes before the main meeting in Minneapolis. And I believe, ultimately, they will get them."
Schefter also mentioned that Goodell emphasized "safety" as the lead reasoning behind why teams want the Tush Push banned, despite there being little to no evidence that it is a harmful play.
"He said, 'I think there are safety issues being considered with the Tush Push. We have very little data, but we see the potential risk. It makes a lot of sense to go back to the old rule prohibiting pulling or pushing [foot]ball carriers.’ Those are Roger Goodell’s words," Schefter said.
NFL owners will meet again in May where a final decision is set to be made. But as it appears right now, things are not looking to good for the Eagles and the future of their dominant Tush Push play if Goodell gets what he wants.
