The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to move on from a 2022 Pro-Bowler this offseason

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to release cornerback Darius Slay.

Slay, a Pro Bowler this past year, spent the last three seasons with the Eagles.

This expected move is a bit of a surprise. Slay just turned 32, but he's coming off a great season. He's under contract for just one more season in Philly.

Releasing Slay is only going to save the Eagles $3.7 million in cap space this season as the move will come with a $22.4 million dead cap hit (a post-June 1 release would allow Philly to spread the dead cap hit out over the next two seasons). They aren't gaining much by moving from a productive player.

This almost feels like the New York Giants releasing James Bradberry last year — a move the Eagles benefited from (Philly just re-signed Bradberry, too).

The Eagles should've learned from the Giants' mistake last year, but it appears they didn't.

Philly wide receiver AJ Brown seemingly agrees, tweeting (and subsequently deleting) a frustrated reaction to the news.

I think Brown speaks for a lot of Eagles fans who don't understand the reasoning behind this decision.

Maybe Philadelphia will come to its senses, though it looks like Slay is already looking for a new home.
