The Philadelphia Eagles have lost a couple of key defenders in free agency this offseason.

Defensive lineman Javon Hargrave, linebackers T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White, and safety Marcus Epps have all departed from Philly over the last week via free agency.

On Sunday night, the Eagles lost another talented defender as safety CJ Gardner-Johnson signed with the Detroit Lions.

Garnder-Johnson, who was traded to the Eagles from the New Orleans Saints just before the 2022 season, signed a one-year deal with the Lions worth up to $8 million.

The former Florida Gators standout was a solid player for Philadelphia last season during their Super Bowl run. Gardner-Johnson's fiery demeanor has led to some folks being concerned about his on-field behavior at times (he's been punched a couple of times, once by former teammate Michael Thomas), but he was still reportedly well-liked in the locker room.

Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown, in fact, took to social media to express his happiness for Gardner-Johnson, who he called a "great teammate".

It's a bit of a surprise that Gardner-Johnson didn't land a bigger deal in free agency. It certainly appears that the former Philly defender passed up some long-term deals in favor of a one-year "prove-it deal" that could allow him to enjoy a healthier marker next offseason.
