The Philadelphia Eagles just made history by signing running back Saquon Barkley to a new deal.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Barkley is getting a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension that now makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
"The deal makes Barkley the NFL’s first $20 million+ per-year running back," Schefter writes. "Barkley also has the ability to earn an additional $15 million in incentives and escalators. The deal includes $36 million fully guaranteed at signing. The Eagles are taking the rare step of extending Barkley one year into his three-year deal – and in the same league year in which they signed him to the initial contract."
The Eagles signed Barkley during NFL free agency last spring, and he was easily one of Howie Roseman's greatest offseason moves.
Barkley finished the 2024 regular season with 2,005 rushing yards on 345 attempts and 13 rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in 33 receptions for 278 receiving yards and two more scores. Those numbers were enough to earn him the 2024 NFL's Offensive Player of the Year Award.
Barkley became just the ninth player in NFL history to log 2,000-plus rushing yards in a single season and currently holds the eighth-most rushing yards in league history. He was also 101 rushing yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record, but the Eagles chose to rest their starter in Week 18 ahead of the playoff run.
Barkley did, however, break Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis's single-season and postseason combined record in the first half of Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs. Barkley finished the Eagles' 40-22 Super Bowl victory with 57 rushing yards on 25 carries to set the new record at 2,504
The New York Giants may not have known Barkley's worth, but the Eagles quickly figured it out.
